Join on a small ship polar expedition cruise that offers a front-row seat to the best of Antarctica. This 16-day journey features 7 full days on the Antarctic Peninsula and will be nothing short of spectacular.

Step aboard the luxurious Ocean Explorer and sail through the Antarctic Peninsula, where you’ll make daily landings by Zodiac boat, led by our highly credentialed, 17-person Expedition Team. With no more than 134 travelers on board, you’re guaranteed to have the expedition of a lifetime, with opportunities for hiking, exploration, and wildlife viewing. Your Expedition Team will share their expertise in biology, geology, and more throughout your shoreside excursions and during engaging onboard lectures.

The Ocean Explorer’s small stature lets you access more remote corners and hidden harbors, giving you even more opportunities to spot and photograph albatrosses, whales, icebergs, and ice floes. There’s no other place on Earth quite like Antarctica.

Throughout your small ship expedition cruise, you’ll enjoy ’s sumptuous accommodations, world-class dining, elegant amenities, and personalized service. Independent explorers can also enjoy one of our exclusive solo cabins and exclusive solo-friendly activities, both on board and ashore.

Your small ship expedition cruise is bookended by extended hotel stays in lively Buenos Aires, a sophisticated counterpoint to your epic discoveries in the wild. Extend your discoveries even further with optional pre- and post-trip extensions in Iguassu Falls and Easter Island.

Please note: We are privileged guests in this extreme land where weather and ice dictate everything. As such, our daily explorations will be dictated by local conditions. Vantage Travel will endeavor to make every effort to ensure that your Antarctica cruise is as educational and fulfilling as possible, while complying with the safety rules and instructions set forth by the IAATO.

DAY 3:

Discover the best of Buenos Aires

Today, you’ll set out on an included city tour of Buenos Aires and discover why this is considered one of the most sophisticated cities in the world. You’ll view important sights such as the Plaza de Mayo, the city’s central square flanked by the neoclassical Catedral Metropolitana, the church home of Pope Francis. Drive by the Cabildo de Buenos Aires, once the site of Spain's colonial administration in the city and scene of the May Revolution of 1810. Originally constructed in 1580 from adobe and thatch, the building was reconstructed in the Baroque-style over the second half of the 18th century. Today it’s a national museum housing a collection of heritage pieces of great historical value. You’ll also see La Casa Rosada (The Pink House), the palatial mansion that serves as the presidential office. You’ll also see the colorful La Boca neighborhood with its vividly painted houses. You’ll pass Caminito, the famed “tango street” where you’ll see several restaurants and milongas (dance salons) featuring tango and folk dance. Perhaps you’ll even catch a glimpse of some dancers practicing their footwork outside.

Lunch money will be provided by Vantage for you to dine where you wish, and you’ll have the afternoon at leisure to continue exploring at your own pace. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Included Feature:

  • City tour of Buenos Aires

Included meals:

Breakfast  & lunch

DAY 4:

Embark your included flight to Ushuaia, then embark the Ocean Explorer

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the airport for your included flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, the “City at the End of the World.” Ushuaia is a charming gateway between the wildernesses of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and Antarctica and you’ll have time to explore a bit on your own. Perhaps you’ll stroll through the Parque Yatana, a woodland reserve where local Fuegians sell handicrafts. Poke around the town’s shops and cafes, then you’ll transfer to the pier to embark the Ocean Explorer, your 5-star expedition ship.

Settle in and enjoy the scenic views of the snowy Andes and Beagle Channel, where Darwin made some of his evolutionary discoveries. Before dinner you’ll meet your Expedition Team as your ship sets sail for Antarctica. They’ll talk to you about their role during the cruise and explain how the expedition works, going over important IAATO regulations that must be observed while in Antarctica, including rules on how close we can get to the wildlife.

Afterward, gather with your fellow travelers for a Captain’s Welcome Dinner.

Please note: Due to the limited availability and scheduling of flights in Ushuaia, we may not be able to spend leisure time here. Flight schedules are provided by a local airline and are out of our control.

Included meals:

Breakfast & dinner

DAYS 5-6:

Crossing the Drake Passage

During these two days at sea, you’ll cross the fabled Drake Passage, which is, quite literally, a “rite of passage” for all Antarctic cruises. And because the Ocean Explorer is outfitted with the game changing ULSTEIN X-BOW® stabilization technology, your crossing is sure to be more enjoyable. However, bear in mind that we will be sailing in some rough waters and you may feel some motion sickness.

The key characteristic of Vantage’s Antarctica expeditions is a strong educational element, and the Expedition Team will prepare you for the adventure to come by hosting presentations on history, geology, ornithology, marine biology, and more topics relevant to your expedition. Our team members have been traveling to polar regions for years, and their expertise and advice will undoubtedly enhance your journey. Not to mention, they’re sure to have some epic travel stories to tell you all about!

Looking for photo tips? Check the schedule (posted on your onboard interactive system) for the next photography workshop. If the seas are calm enough for you to be on deck, keep your eyes peeled for pelagic birds or whales.

During your voyage, you can enjoy our rejuvenating spa services and gym, too. Bear in mind, however, that these southern waters have been a challenge even for the most experienced of sailors and seafarers. Even though our ship is equipped with all the latest technology available, this won't prevent the vessel from experiencing movement and sea sickness can occur.

Included Meals:

2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners

DAYS 7-13:

Discovery awaits with 7 days in Antarctica

Welcome to Antarctica — the 7th Continent! In the history of humankind, only a tiny handful of people have ever set foot on Antarctica and now you’re one of them. Prepare to witness the most unspoiled, sublime terrain on earth, with its vast glacial expanses and massive electric blue icebergs the size of cities.

You’ll explore during the austral summer, the most temperate time of year. Each day, you’ll have one landing in which you venture ashore on versatile Zodiac boats, and one scenic cruising in which you’ll likely head to the deck for the most optimal views.

During landings, you’ll break into small groups and enter Zodiac boats alongside your Expedition Team. Once on shore, they’ll scope out conditions and offer guided hikes, walks, talks, and offer anecdotes and helpful information, depending on the wildlife and nature you encounter.

There’s no doubt that we’ll happen upon some penguin rookeries — most likely Adélie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguin varieties. These curious and flightless birds will charm you immediately! From the shore, you may also spot killer and humpback whales, as well as crabeater, leopard, and Weddell seals, which are prosperous in these cold waters. We’ll explore a diversity of landscapes, including active volcanoes, mossy cliffs, and rocky beaches, too.

You’ll also have free time to explore on your own and take lots of photographs, using the knowledge you’ve gained from the Expedition Team’s lectures and your conversations with them to enhance your explorations.

While going ashore may seem more exciting and rewarding than cruising, you’ll be surprised. There’s so much to see in Antarctica, and cruising is oftentimes the best way to accomplish that, as the Ocean Explorer’s small size grants us more flexibility in where we navigate compared to other cruise lines. Look forward to getting up-close to icebergs, spotting whales, and other spontaneous and bucket-list experiences. If we’re lucky, we may witness humpback whales during a “bubble-net” feeding, in which a group of whales circles a school of fish and engages in a team effort to disorient and corral the fish into a “net” of bubbles.

You can also further enhance your expedition by joining the Expedition Team for optional polar kayaking. This is a popular option, so we encourage you to reserve your spot as early as possible.

Please note: Remember, daily life in Antarctica is determined by the elements, and we’ll adjust our landings as our adventure progresses in accordance with IAATO regulations.

Included Features:

DAYS 14-15:

Cruise the Drake Passage

Heading back to Argentina, you’ll again cross the Drake Passage, cruising the legendary waters around Cape Horn. Enjoy more opportunities to take advantage of your ship’s amenities, perhaps visiting the spa for a facial or soothing massage.

You might also take in a movie, join a fitness class, or simply curling up with a book from the library. As we get closer to South America, you might join your Expedition Team on deck for birdwatching, perhaps spotting fulmar, petrel, or even a wandering albatross, with its eleven-foot wingspan. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life—these waters frequently host southern right whales.

Although our ship is equipped with the latest ULSTEIN X-BOW® technology, designed to provide a more comfortable cruising experience, you may feel some motion sickness as we will be sailing in some rough waters.

This itinerary is representative of the discoveries planned for the Antarctic region. Flexibility is a hallmark of our explorations, and your day-by-day cruise itinerary may change based on the weather and local conditions; as well as opportunities to take full advantage of rare wildlife sightings.
