You’ll see the College of Charleston, Harleston Village (one of the city’s earliest suburbs, the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, and the famous Battery with its elegant 18th- and 19th-century townhouses. The highlight of this tour is a visit to the early 19th-century Joseph Manigault House. DAY 7:

Revisit antebellum life in Wilmington, North Carolina

If you’re up on deck this morning, take in the beautiful coastal scenery as your ship makes its way up the wide Cape Fear River to Wilmington. This historic port city boasts a beautifully restored waterfront, and exquisite architecture which you’ll see on today’s tour.

This morning’s tour spotlights some of the homes listed on Wilmington’s National Register of Historic Places, an area comprising 230 blocks of beautifully preserved architecture from many different eras. You’ll also learn about the many movies and television shows filmed here. A highlight of your tour will be a visit to the historic Bellamy Mansion. Designed in the mid-19th century by architect James F. Post for wealthy physician Dr. John D. Bellamy, the 10,000-square-foot, 22-room mansion was constructed between 1859 and 1861. The mansion’s architecture shares elements of Greek Revival, Neoclassical, and Italianate styles. Towering Corinthian columns draw your eye up to the ornate wood trim work that includes dentil molding, and an egg and dart motif. Every aspect of the mansion’s design was deliberate, from the east-facing kitchen to the top-level belvedere that functioned as a sort of early air conditioning.

If time allows following your tour, you may want to enjoy more of this lovely city on your own. Perhaps you can take a stroll along the Riverwalk, pop into one of the many well-regarded microbreweries, or visit the Railroad Museum.

Included Feature:

  • Guided tour of the Historic mansion houses of Wilmington

Uncover Hamilton’s history today

Today you’ll explore Hamilton by day on a guided tour of the town’s highlights. A friendly and knowledgeable local guide will accompany you throughout your tour, entertaining you with local lore and interesting anecdotes.

Your tour begins with a stop at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. This towering structure was built in 1846, constructed entirely of cast iron, and is one of only two cast-iron lighthouses still in existence today. Overlooking both South Shore and Little Sound, a climb to the top of its 185-step spiral staircase offers panoramic views of the entire city, as well as the Royal Naval Dockyard. Your tour continues along the South Shore, where you’ll marvel at the pink sand beaches, sapphire blue waters, and the visible barrier reef that surround this island paradise before passing over Somerset Bridge, one of the smallest drawbridges ever constructed. Get closer to Bermuda’s rich maritime history as you make your way to the Royal Naval Dockyard, which served as a stronghold for the British Royal Navy during times of war. Today the dockyard serves as a cruise ship terminal, with shops, restaurants, and other attractions ready to welcome visitors. Beautiful Martha’s Vineyard is famous as an affluent summer resort, and you can certainly do some celebrity-watching here. But your eyes will also be drawn to the sweeping natural beauty, historic towns, and charming architecture. If some of it looks familiar, perhaps that’s because the movie Jaws was filmed here.

You’ll arrive ashore via tender for today’s tour, which starts with historic Oak Bluffs, once a religious revival summer camp. Then, head along the coast to Edgartown, a quaint village that was originally an important whaling center. Ride though the farmlands of West Tisbury and the hills of Chilmark, where celebrities such as Ted Danson, Carly Simon, and James Taylor have homes. Discover the best of Boston and Cambridge, and disembark the Ocean Explorer

This morning you’ll disembark the Ocean Explorer in Gloucester, Massachusetts. From here you’ll transfer to your centrally located Boston hotel, enjoying a tour of Boston and Cambridge along the way.

You’ll pass Copley Square, ringed by architectural jewels like Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, and the Old South Church. Continue riding through the Back Bay and see trendy Newbury Street, Public Garden, Boston Common, and Beacon Hill, crowned by the gold-domed, Bulfinch-designed Massachusetts State House. From here you’ll head to the Old North Church, where Paul Revere hung two lanterns in the steeple to signal that the British were coming. The church sits in the middle of the North End, Boston’s historic Italian neighborhood. Take a little time to walk around and enjoy its sights, sounds, smells, and (of course) tastes. From here, you’ll cross the Charles River and head across Cambridge to Harvard Square, where you’ll have time to walk around and see the campus and surrounding commercial center of America’s oldest and most prestigious university.
