Located on Montserrat Mountain in northern Spain, the 11th-century Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery is notable for its enshrined statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, considered one of Spain’s most celebrated religious images. Legend has it that the monks could not move the statue to construct their monastery, and chose to build the monastery around it instead. Surrounded by an altar of gold, the statue is located at the rear of the chapel and is a pilgrimage site for believers.
