What to Expect

Activity Level

Takes into consideration the physical requirements for each of the trips, walking, hiking, climbing in and out of safari vehicles etc.
           Moderately Strenuous

Travelers should be able to climb 80 stairs consecutively, plus walk at least 4 miles over some steep slopes and loose or uneven surfaces without difficulty. Walks typically last for 4 or more hours at a time. Altitude can range from 7,000 to 9,000 feet.

Pacing

Takes into consideration the length of bus rides, flights, number of destinations in the number of days
           Moderate

Pacing is sometimes robust, and may include several long days with early hotel departures, active sightseeing and evening activities. Opportunities for daytime rest and rejuvenation may be limited on most days. May include significant motor coach time, two or more on-tour flights, and/or occasional travel via non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, Zodiac ship tenders, rickshaws/pedi-cabs, etc.

PACING:

  • The pace of this itinerary is moderately strenuous
  • Look forward to a 14-day Norwegian adventure, with a 11-night northbound cruise voyage and 2 nights in hotels

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Steps are to be expected during walking tours.
  • Some optional shore excursions, including sightseeing and port-of-call orientation walking tours, require walking on uneven terrain
  • Embarking and disembarking the ship also requires a fair bit of walking
  • There are hiking opportunities for those looking to explore the incredible nature of this region further. Hiking passes from Hurtigruten are available for purchase on board for the cruise portion of your adventure.

TERRAIN & TRANSPORTATION:

  • You will encounter some uneven terrain during walking tours, including cobblestone paths.
  • Most sightseeing is on air-conditioned / heated coaches with guides.

CLIMATE:

  • Temperatures in northern Norway will change during the course of the voyage and perhaps throughout the day.
  • Norway’s climate is generally cooler than most other European nations.
  • As a national average, Norway’s summer temperatures peak in the high 60s F and cool off other months.
  • Cities in Northern Norway, such as Mehamn, only see an average July high of 59 F.
  • Rainfall and snow averages vary by season.
  • To prepare, we recommend layered dress to adapt to changes, as well as breathable rain and windproof clothing. Be sure to have a good outer jacket over normal clothes.
  • It is important to have good, sturdy walking shoes and hat, etc. for shore excursions, included sightseeing, and port-of-call orientation walking tours. A helpful hint — you may want to bring an extra pair of waterproof walking shoes for comfort!
  • Since the weather is unpredictable, please check weather sites online for 10-day forecasts closer to your departure date to plan your packing accordingly.
