What to Expect

Activity Level

Takes into consideration the physical requirements for each of the trips, walking, hiking, climbing in and out of safari vehicles etc.
           Moderate

Travelers should be able to climb 60 stairs consecutively, plus walk at least 3 miles over some steep slopes and loose or uneven surfaces without difficulty. Walks typically last for 3 or more hours at a time. Altitude can range from 5,000 to 7,000 feet.

Pacing

Takes into consideration the length of bus rides, flights, number of destinations in the number of days
           Moderate

Pacing is sometimes robust, and may include several long days with early hotel departures, active sightseeing and evening activities. Opportunities for daytime rest and rejuvenation may be limited on most days. May include significant motor coach time, two or more on-tour flights, and/or occasional travel via non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, Zodiac ship tenders, rickshaws/pedi-cabs, etc.

PACING
  • This small ship ocean cruise is moderately paced
  • Spend 16 nights on board the Ocean Explorer, 2 nights in Belém and 2 nights in Nassau
  • Enjoy 7 relaxing days on board as you cruise the Atlantic Ocean and a total of 11 days touring. There is an overnight port call in Barbados
  • Sightseeing is usually offered in half-day tours, with time to relax every day
  • Cruising often takes place overnight, but some scenic sailing will be conducted during daylight hours

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • You should be in relatively good health to fully enjoy this tour
  • This is a tour for moderately active travelers. There are several walking tours throughout during which you will be on your feet for an hour or two at a time.
  • Sightseeing takes place on air-conditioned/heated coaches with guides
  • Footing can be uneven or challenging in some of the historic sites we visit. Walking on the cobbled streets of Old Towns will also require care
  • Travelers must be able to climb in and out of a small Zodiac excursion boat
  • Please refer to Vantage's wheelchair and handicapped traveler policy for additional information

TERRAIN & TRANSPORTATION
  • Most shore excursions, especially those in historic cities and in the rainforest, require walking on uneven terrain
  • Shore excursions utilize air-conditioned shuttles or motorcoaches. During the hotel-based land portion of this trip, a walking tour might leave directly from the hotel, or it too might utilize air-conditioned shuttles or motorcoaches
  • In some locations you may ride along uneven or bumpy roads, especially in more rural areas or at historical sites
  • The journey to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is by way of an open-air train

CLIMATE
  • You will be traveling at and near the equator where the sun is strong, so we advise you to pack sunscreen and moisturizer (in the amounts permitted by TSA regulations), and bring a hat and sunglasses, as well. If you’re traveling in summer, be sure to bring very cool cotton or linen clothing
  • There is always a chance of rain, so bring a light rain jacket or umbrella
  • Since the weather is unpredictable, please check weather sites online for 10-day forecasts closer to your departure date to plan your packing accordingly
  • For protection from the sun, do as the locals do and cover up by wearing longer pants or skirts, and shirts with sleeves

Please Note: Ocean cruising is not the same experience as river cruising; as such, you may experience fluctuating tides and weather patterns that may involve some rocking of your vessel. Itineraries will include all activities as planned except in extreme cases that can’t be controlled by your shipboard crew. Day-by-day itineraries are preliminary and therefore subject to change. If changes occur while on tour, you will be notified by your Cruise Director or regional expert.
